Toco Lifting is approved by the Department of Labour as a Lifting Machinery Entity (LME No. 008), supplying certified Grade 80 alloy chain slings across South Africa and all SADC markets since 2002.

Toco Lifting (Pty) Ltd supplies and assembles Grade 80 alloy chain slings across South Africa and SADC, made up to a specified reach and rated working load limit at a 4:1 design factor under the EN 818 series. Single, two leg, three leg, four leg, and endless assemblies are made to order with matching Grade 80 components, tested and certified within Toco’s LME 008 scope, and recertified when next inspected.

What Toco supplies in Grade 80 chain slings

Toco supplies and assembles Grade 80 alloy chain slings in house, made up to a specified reach and rated working load limit. Grade 80 alloy chain has a tensile grade of 800 N/mm² and works to a 4:1 design factor, meaning the minimum breaking load is four times the rated working load limit. Slings are built with matching Grade 80 chain, master links, connecting links, and hooks selected for the assembly. Toco assembles both Grade 80 and Grade 100 alloy chain slings, so the higher grade is available where a higher working load limit is needed at the same nominal chain diameter.

AssemblyTypical use
Single legOne chain leg with a master link and end fitting for straight or choked lifts
Two legBalanced lifting of a single load on two attachment points
Three and four legMulti point lifting where the load is shared across three or four pick up points
EndlessA continuous loop for choke or basket hitches

Reach, leg configuration, and end fittings are built to order. Rated working load limit is confirmed per certificate on enquiry.

What makes up a Grade 80 chain sling

A Grade 80 chain sling is a matched assembly, not a single part. Toco builds each one from Grade 80 components rated to the same working load limit so the sling performs as one system.

ComponentRole
Master linkTop fitting that connects the sling to the crane hook or lifting point. Multiple leg slings use a master link assembly.
Chain legsGrade 80 alloy chain cut to the required reach, one leg per pick up point.
Connecting linksCouple the chain legs to the master link and to the end fittings.
End fittingsSling hooks, grab hooks or self locking hooks, selected for the load and attachment point.

How configuration and sling angle affect rated capacity

The rated working load limit of a multiple leg chain sling depends on the number of legs and the included angle between them. As the angle widens, the load in each leg rises, so the rated capacity is set for the working angle and marked on the identification tag. Incorrect sling angles are a leading cause of lift failures, so the values on the tag and certificate govern safe use.

Certification supplied with Grade 80 chain slings

Chain slings fall within Toco’s registered LME 008 testing scope. Each assembly is inspected, tested, and certified by a dedicated Lifting Machinery Inspector and Team on Toco Lifting premises, with the scope of testing and certification to be advised on enquiry. Under Driven Machinery Regulation 18, lifting tackle in use must be thoroughly examined at intervals not exceeding three months by a competent person. Toco repairs, load tests, and recertifies existing Grade 80 chain slings, returning them to service with current documentation.

Where Grade 80 chain slings are used

Grade 80 alloy chain slings are the workhorse rigging choice across South African industry, valued for strength, flexibility, and tolerance of rough handling and high temperatures. Toco supplies them across sectors, including the applications below.

IndustryApplication
MiningUnderground and surface rigging, plant shutdowns, and equipment moves
ConstructionLifting structural steel, precast units, and plant on site
Heavy engineeringWorkshop, fabrication, and assembly lifting
Plant maintenanceRoutine maintenance lifts and machinery removal

Toco serves these and other sectors. Tell the team the load and reach and they will specify a suitable assembly.

Frequently asked questions

Can Toco make up Grade 80 chain slings to a specified reach and WLL?

Yes. Toco assembles single, two leg, three leg, four leg, and endless Grade 80 slings to a set reach and rated working load limit with matching Grade 80 components, supplied certified.

Does Toco supply both Grade 80 and Grade 100 chain slings?

Yes. Toco assembles both Grade 80 (800 N/mm²) and Grade 100 (1000 N/mm²) alloy chain slings to order, so the higher grade is available where more capacity is needed at the same nominal diameter.

What is the design factor of a Grade 80 chain sling?

A 4:1 design factor, meaning the minimum breaking load is four times the rated working load limit. This factor is statutory under Driven Machinery Regulation 18.

Are Grade 80 chain slings tested and certified?

Yes. Chain slings fall within Toco’s LME 008 scope and are tested and certified, with the scope to be advised on enquiry. Toco also repairs and recertifies existing slings.

How often must chain slings be examined?

Under DMR 18, lifting tackle in use must be thoroughly examined at intervals not exceeding three months by a competent person.

Toco supplies and certifies Grade 80 chain slings across South Africa and into SADC, including Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Namibia, Eswatini and Lesotho.

Chain slings are lifting tackle examined under South Africa’s Driven Machinery Regulation 18. See Toco’s DMR 18 compliance guide for the examination requirements.
