Polyester webbing lifting slings from Toco Lifting
Toco Lifting has supplied webbing lifting slings to riggers, mining contractors and heavy-industry sites across South Africa and the SADC region since 2002. These slings are widely known in the trade as nylon slings, and that is the term most buyers search for. The accurate technical description is polyester webbing slings: Toco’s slings are woven from polyester, not nylon. The two materials behave differently – polyester has low stretch under load, good resistance to most acids and minimal water absorption, which is why it is the standard material for modern lifting slings. Toco Lifting is approved by the Department of Labour under LME No. 008 to test and certify webbing lifting slings, which fall within Toco’s lifting tackle scope. Every sling is supplied with a Conformance Inspection Certificate.
Duplex flat and endless round slings
Toco supplies polyester webbing slings in the two principal forms. Choose the form to suit the lift and the way the sling is rigged.
Duplex flat slings – flat woven webbing with a reinforced eye at each end. The flat body gives a wide bearing surface against the load, which spreads the grip and suits straight, vertical and choker lifts. See the duplex flat slings page for detail.
Endless round slings – a continuous loop of load-bearing polyester yarn inside a protective woven cover, with no eyes and no end fittings. The endless loop can be rotated to move the wear point, and it conforms closely around awkward loads. See the endless round slings page for detail.
Working Load Limits and colour code
Polyester webbing slings follow a standard colour code: each Working Load Limit has its own webbing colour and width, so a sling’s rated capacity can be identified at a glance on site. The table below shows Toco’s standard range.
Webbing widthColourWorking Load Limit
50 mmViolet1 ton
60 mmGreen2 ton
90 mmYellow3 ton
120 mmGrey4 ton
150 mmRed5 ton
180 mmBrown6 ton
240 mmBlue8 ton
300 mmOrange10 ton
Working Load Limit is the vertical rated capacity of the sling. Higher capacities – 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50 and 80 ton – are woven in orange and supplied to order. The rated capacity changes with the hitch and the sling angle used: a choker hitch and wider sling angles reduce the effective capacity. Always size the sling to the actual hitch and angle in service. Toco’s webbing slings are assembled to SANS 94-1 and SANS 94-2.
Where webbing slings are used
Mining – equipment lifts, plant maintenance and general rigging where a light, easily handled sling is needed.
Construction – structural lifts, site material handling and crane work.
Daily preventative maintenance – routine plant and machinery lifts where a soft sling protects finished surfaces.
Polyester webbing slings suit many other heavy industrial lifting applications – contact Toco Lifting to confirm the right sling for your work.
Testing and certification
Toco is approved by the Department of Labour to test and certify webbing lifting slings, and every sling is supplied with a Conformance Inspection Certificate. Slings in service must be inspected before each use and removed from service when worn, cut, heat-damaged or chemically attacked. For sustained service, periodic written inspections by a competent person are required under South African OHS regulations.
Frequently asked questions
Are nylon slings and polyester slings the same thing?
In everyday trade use the term nylon sling is used for the soft webbing lifting slings most sites use, and that is the term most buyers search for. The accurate technical description is polyester webbing sling: Toco’s slings are woven from polyester. Polyester has low stretch under load, good resistance to most acids and low water absorption, which is why it is the standard material for modern webbing slings.
What is the difference between a duplex flat sling and an endless round sling?
A duplex flat sling is flat woven webbing with a reinforced eye at each end; its wide flat body gives a broad bearing surface and suits straight, vertical and choker lifts. An endless round sling is a continuous loop of load-bearing polyester yarn inside a protective cover, with no eyes; the loop can be rotated to move the wear point and conforms closely around awkward loads.
How do I read the webbing sling colour code?
Polyester webbing slings follow a standard colour code in which each Working Load Limit has its own colour and webbing width. Violet is 1 ton, green 2 ton, yellow 3 ton, grey 4 ton, red 5 ton, brown 6 ton, blue 8 ton and orange 10 ton. The colour lets a sling’s rated capacity be identified at a glance on site, but the rating tag on the sling is always the authority.
What capacity of webbing sling can Toco supply?
Toco supplies polyester webbing slings from 1 ton through 10 ton Working Load Limit as a standard range, in the colour-coded widths from 50 mm to 300 mm. Higher capacities of 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50 and 80 ton are supplied to order. Tell Toco the load, the hitch type and the sling angle, and Toco will confirm the correct sling.
Are Toco webbing slings tested and certified?
Yes. Toco is approved by the Department of Labour to test and certify webbing lifting slings, and every sling is supplied with a Conformance Inspection Certificate. Toco’s webbing slings are assembled to SANS 94-1 and SANS 94-2.
Why does the rated capacity change with the sling angle?
When a sling is used in a basket or two-leg hitch, the legs pull at an angle, and that angle increases the tension in each leg for the same load. Wider angles put more tension into the sling and reduce its effective lifting capacity. A choker hitch also reduces the rated capacity. Always size the sling to the actual hitch and angle in service, never to the vertical rating alone.
