Recovery Strop

High modulus polyethylene recovery strop for vehicle and equipment recovery, towing and restraint. Made to order, minimum break loads from 30 tonne to 500 tonne, manufactured to ISO 10325 and ISO 2307. Supplied across SA and SADC by Toco Lifting.

Description

This is a recovery product, not lifting tackle. Never use a recovery strop for overhead lifting or material handling. It is rated by minimum break load, which is not a working load limit.

Toco Lifting supplies recovery strops across South Africa and SADC, in high modulus polyethylene with an abrasion resistant cover, made to order with minimum break loads from 30 tonne to 500 tonne.

A recovery strop is a high strength synthetic loop used to recover, tow or restrain a vehicle or piece of equipment. Against chain or steel wire rope of the same strength it is a fraction of the weight, quicker to rig, and it stores very little energy, so it recoils far less if it reaches its limit. The tonnage figures are minimum break load, not a working load limit. For a rated load for a specific recovery duty, request the specification from Toco.

Rating

Minimum break load, and why it is not a working load limit

Every Toco recovery strop is rated by its minimum break load (MBL), the force at which the strop is built to fail. This is not a working load limit and must never be used as one. A recovery strop is a vehicle and equipment recovery product. It is not lifting tackle and must not be used for overhead lifting or material handling.

The safe load for any recovery task depends on the rigging method, the angle and the duty, so Toco supplies a certified minimum break load and a traceable identification tag on every strop, and confirms the rated load for a specific recovery duty on enquiry. Do not work a strop at or near its break load, and do not derive your own working factor from the break load. Responsibility for the rigging method and the load applied in service rests with the user.

Construction

High modulus polyethylene build

The strop is built on a high modulus polyethylene core with an abrasion resistant braided cover and protected soft eyes. The cover protects the core and adds diameter but carries no load. The certified break load on the tag is for the strop as supplied, eyes included, so always work to that figure. For a lighter pulling and rigging option see Toco’s synthetic rope.

High strength to weight

A fraction of the weight of chain or wire rope at the same break load, so it is faster and safer to handle.

Low stretch

Minimal elongation under load, so the strop holds its line rather than springing.

Low recoil

Stores very little energy, so it snaps back far less than nylon if it reaches its limit.

Larger ratings up to 500 tonne are supplied on request. The cover adds diameter without adding strength, so confirm the diameter, length and eye size with Toco for the break load you need.

Where used

Where recovery strops are used

Restraint

Load restraint

Holding loads where a light synthetic strop suits.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is a recovery strop rated by working load limit or by break load?

By minimum break load, the force at which the strop is built to fail, not by a working load limit, and it is not for overhead lifting or material handling. For a rated load for a specific recovery duty, request the specification from Toco rather than deriving a factor from the break load yourself.

What is a recovery strop made of?

A high modulus polyethylene core with an abrasion resistant braided cover and protected soft eyes. The fibre gives a very high strength to weight ratio, low elongation and high abrasion resistance.

What break loads and sizes are available?

Standard minimum break loads run from 30 tonne to 500 tonne, with the body diameter increasing as the rating rises. Toco confirms the exact diameter, length and end configuration on enquiry.

Can Toco supply a custom length, eye size or colour?

Yes. Recovery strops are made to order, so length, eye size, colour and optional hardware are specified to suit the application.

What standards is the strop made to?

The rope is manufactured to ISO 10325 and tested to ISO 2307, and each strop is supplied with a certificate of conformance and a traceable identification tag.

Does the cover carry any load?

No. The cover protects the core and adds diameter, but the load is carried by the high modulus polyethylene core. Work to the certified break load on the tag.
