Toco Lifting (Pty) Ltd is the sole authorised distributor of Vital® lever hoists in South Africa, supplying the Vital® VR2 series of ratchet lever hoists. Stocked capacities are 0.8 ton, 1 ton, 1.6 ton, 3.2 ton, 6.3 ton and 9 ton; other capacities are sourced on request. Vital® lever hoists comply with SANS 1636 and are fitted with SANS 1592 load chain. Each unit is supplied on a standard 3 metre lift and ships with a Performance (Load Test) Certificate. Toco Lifting is a registered Lifting Machinery Entity (LME No. 008) and performance tests, certifies and re-certifies the equipment it supplies through its own workshop, under the oversight of a dedicated Lifting Machinery Inspector and Team.
Toco Lifting is the sole Southern African distributor of VITAL® lever hoists. These SANS/OSH Act approved heavy-duty hoists are ergonomically designed for maximum output efficiency and safe operation. An OLL (overload limiter) is fitted as standard. Lever hoists are portable lifting devices used in factories, mines, farms, construction sites, wharves, docks and warehouses for a wide variety of lifting and materials handling operations. Toco Lifting has been the sole authorised Southern African distributor of Vital® chain blocks and lever hoists since 2003, confirmed by certificate dated 20 July 2018 from Vital Chain Block Mfg. Co., Ltd. of Osaka, Japan (view distributorship certificate (PDF)). The Vital® factory manufactures to Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) specifications.
Capacity range and standard lift
Toco supplies the Vital® VR2 series of lever hoists. Stocked capacities are 0.8 t, 1 t, 1.6 t, 3.2 t, 6.3 t and 9 t; other capacities are sourced on request. Units are supplied as standard on a 3 metre lift; other lift heights are available on request. The VR2 lever hoist is a compact, robust ratchet hoist for lifting, lowering, pulling and tensioning, and operates in any position.

Toco tests and certifies Vital® lever hoists, not only supplies them
A lever hoist can suspend and hold a load on its own, so it is examined and performance tested (load tested) and issued with a Performance (Load Test) Certificate, the certificate class for equipment that can suspend or halt motion automatically once input energy stops. Toco performance tests Vital® lever hoists in its own workshop on a SANAS-calibrated load cell and re-certifies them for the life of the equipment under the oversight of a dedicated Lifting Machinery Inspector and Team. Lifting tackle in use must be re-inspected at intervals not exceeding three months under DMR 18(10)(e); a Performance (Load Test) Certificate is valid for 12 months.

What is the difference between a chain block and a lever hoist?
A chain block is operated with a hand chain and is normally used for vertical lifting from an overhead point. A lever hoist is operated with a hand lever and can pull or tension a load in any direction, which makes it well suited to confined spaces and horizontal or angled work.
Are Vital® lever hoists performance tested?
Yes. Because a lever hoist can suspend a load on its own, each unit is performance tested (load tested) and issued with a Performance (Load Test) Certificate. Toco carries out this testing in its own workshop, under the oversight of an ECSA-registered Lifting Machinery Inspector.
How often must a lever hoist be re-tested?
Toco works to three intervals on lever hoists and chain blocks: a quarterly inspection every three months, a maintenance inspection every six months, and an annual maintenance examination with performance (load) testing every 12 months. Lifting tackle in use must be re-inspected at intervals not exceeding three months under DMR 18(10)(e), and a Performance (Load Test) Certificate is valid for 12 months. Toco re-inspects and re-certifies equipment it has supplied.
Do Vital® lever hoists have an OLL (overload limiter)?
Yes. An OLL (overload limiter) is fitted as standard: no chain block or lever hoist leaves Toco without one. It is factory-set and must not be adjusted in the field.
