Stainless steel wire rope from Toco Lifting

Toco Lifting has supplied wire rope to riggers, processing plants and heavy-industry sites across South Africa and the SADC region since 2002. Stainless steel wire rope is the corrosion-resistant grade of wire rope, chosen where ordinary galvanised or self-colour rope would rust or stain. It is supplied in Grade 304 and Grade 316 stainless steel. Toco Lifting is approved by the Department of Labour under LME No. 008 to test and certify steel wire rope, and each rope length is supplied with a certificate. Stainless wire rope is sourced and cut to the construction, diameter and grade the application requires, speak to Toco’s team to specify the right rope.

Why choose stainless steel wire rope

Stainless steel wire rope is selected for the working environment rather than for outright strength. Its strengths are:

  • Corrosion resistance, stainless steel resists rust and staining, which makes it the choice for wet, humid, marine, washdown and chemically aggressive environments such as processing and ammonia plants.
  • Clean appearance, the bright, non-rusting finish suits architectural, balustrade and exposed-rigging applications where appearance matters.
  • Easily formed, stainless wire is readily formed, especially in smaller diameters, and lays correctly when stranded into rope.
  • Low maintenance, stainless rope needs less protective maintenance than galvanised rope in corrosive service, and suits environments where a non-magnetic material is wanted.

The trade-off is strength: stainless steel wire rope is rated up to 1300 MPa, while galvanised steel wire rope is available to higher tensile grades. Where maximum strength matters more than corrosion resistance, galvanised steel wire rope is the better choice. Toco supplies both and will advise on the right rope for the job.

Grade 304 and Grade 316 stainless

Stainless steel wire rope is supplied in two main grades, chosen for how aggressive the environment is:

  • Grade 304, the general-purpose stainless grade. It resists corrosion well in most indoor, outdoor and washdown environments.
  • Grade 316, the higher corrosion-resistance grade. It performs better than 304 in marine, coastal, chloride and chemically aggressive service, where salt or chemicals would attack a lesser grade.

Toco will advise which grade suits the environment when you describe the application.

Construction, diameter and certification

Stainless steel wire rope is built in the same range of constructions as ordinary steel wire rope, for example 6×19 and 6×36 classes, with the construction chosen to balance flexibility against abrasion resistance for the application. Toco’s full wire rope range runs from 1 mm to 56 mm diameter. Stainless wire rope is sourced to specification on enquiry: tell Toco the diameter, construction and grade required, and Toco will supply the correct rope cut to length. Each rope length is supplied with a certificate. Where a rope is assembled into a wire rope sling, the finished sling is issued with its own Conformance Inspection Certificate.

Where stainless steel wire rope is used

  • Refinery and processing, rigging and rope work in corrosive and chemically aggressive plant environments.
  • Oil and gas, equipment in marine and coastal service where salt corrosion attacks ordinary rope.
  • Daily preventative maintenance, washdown areas, food and process plant, and humid environments where rust is not acceptable.

Stainless steel wire rope suits many other corrosion-sensitive and architectural applications, contact Toco Lifting to confirm the right rope for your work.

Frequently asked questions

What is stainless steel wire rope?

Stainless steel wire rope is wire rope made from stainless steel wire, chosen for its resistance to rust and corrosion. It is used where ordinary galvanised or self-colour wire rope would corrode or stain, in wet, humid, marine, washdown and chemically aggressive environments, and in architectural applications where a clean, non-rusting appearance is wanted.

What is the difference between Grade 304 and Grade 316 stainless?

Grade 304 is the general-purpose stainless grade and resists corrosion well in most indoor, outdoor and washdown environments. Grade 316 has higher corrosion resistance and performs better in marine, coastal, chloride and chemically aggressive service. Toco supplies both and will advise which grade suits the environment when you describe the application.

Is stainless steel wire rope as strong as galvanised wire rope?

Stainless steel wire rope is rated up to 1300 MPa, while galvanised steel wire rope is available in higher tensile grades. Stainless rope is chosen for corrosion resistance and appearance rather than for outright strength. Where maximum strength is the priority, galvanised steel wire rope is the better choice. Toco supplies both and will advise on the right rope for the job.

What diameters and constructions of stainless wire rope can Toco supply?

Toco’s full wire rope range runs from 1 mm to 56 mm diameter, in constructions such as the 6×19 and 6×36 classes. Stainless steel wire rope is sourced to specification on enquiry. Tell Toco the diameter, construction and grade required, and Toco will supply the correct rope cut to length.

Is stainless steel wire rope supplied with a certificate?

Yes. Each rope length is supplied with a certificate, and Toco is approved by the Department of Labour to test and certify steel wire rope. Where a rope is assembled into a wire rope sling, the finished sling is issued with its own Conformance Inspection Certificate.

Where is stainless steel wire rope used?

Stainless steel wire rope is used wherever corrosion resistance or a clean appearance is required: refinery and processing plant, oil and gas and marine service, washdown and food-process areas, humid environments, and architectural and balustrade work. It is also chosen where a non-magnetic material is wanted.
