Sling assembly for a Dubai project
Toco assembled four steel wire rope slings from 52 mm wire rope with a minimum breaking force of 1 700 kN, supplied with 55 tonne shackles.
The slings were built to DMR 18 statutory requirements at a 6:1 factor of safety. On international export the factor of safety applied to a steel wire rope sling is 5:1, the international standard norm.
The set was assembled and turned around in 24 hours. Quick turnaround is core to how Toco works: slings are built in house on Toco's own presses rather than sent out, and a full range of spare parts is held, so a job does not wait on a third party.
20 tonne lifting beam, Guinea
Toco supplied a 20 tonne WLL lifting beam with adjustable chain slings into Guinea, used to lift a 13.5 tonne drilling machine.
The job is representative of Toco's export work into central and west Africa: the equipment is specified against the load and the lift, built and certified in South Africa, and collected Ex Works Germiston by the buyer's freight forwarder.
102 000 metres of steel wire rope into central Africa
Toco exported 102 000 metres of 10 mm steel wire rope into central Africa.

Toco stocks steel wire rope from 1 mm to 56 mm, holding to 30 mm as the normal stocking line with larger diameters ordered in, predominantly at 1960 MPa. Rope is cut to length, spliced and certified in house.
Rock securing for Cape Town Metro
Toco's Cape Town team supplied four steel wire rope slings and eye nuts with chain attached at either end, used to secure an estimated 10 to 15 tonnes of unstable rock for safe removal by Cape Town Metro.

The rigging held an overhanging boulder above the Cape Peninsula coastline in place while it was brought down under control.
Cable-laid grommet slings, 12.7 to 75.9 tonnes
Toco manufactured a set of cable-laid grommet slings ranging from 12.7 tonnes to 75.9 tonnes WLL for a single project.

Each client sling is custom made to the project and its requirement. Standard lengths and working load limits are a starting point, but size and WLL vary to the client's specification. Toco's full manufacturing capability for cable-laid grommets runs from 1 tonne to 340 tonnes WLL on a vertical hitch, and a cable-laid grommet is worked to a factor of safety of 8:1 per DMR 18, supplied with a Conformance Inspection Certificate.

Cable-laid grommet slings, Kusile power station
Toco manufactured cable-laid grommet slings from 30 tonnes to 120 tonnes for Kusile power station.
Grommets at that range are spliced and finished in house at Germiston, then proof loaded before they leave. Each is supplied with a Conformance Inspection Certificate.
Port work: jetty and load-out facilities
Toco has supplied jetty and load-out facilities in Tanzania and Mozambique.
On the jetty and facilities project in Tanzania, that included four 80 tonne by 30 metre endless grommet slings. The port work also included socketing 400 metre by 38 millimetre winch cables.

Jetty expansion, Maputo
Toco supplies mooring lines and jetty piling upending cables to contractors on the jetty expansion project at Maputo, Mozambique, and works with partners in Mozambique and the DRC.

Steel wire rope slings are assembled in house from 6 millimetres to over 56 millimetres, in 6×19 and 6×36 constructions with fibre, independent wire rope or polypropylene cores, to working load limits into the hundreds of tonnes, in custom lengths. Cable-laid grommets are worked to 8:1 under DMR 18, against the 5:1 standard allowance.
Assembly is done in Toco's own rigging workshops on specialised swaging and splicing equipment, under the oversight of an ECSA-registered Lifting Machinery Inspector. That gives quick turnaround, traceability, and a test certificate for every assembly.
Terminations are matched to the lift: mechanically swaged Flemish eye, Afgrip and National ferrule, or hand-spliced Admiralty and Liverpool terminations. Endless grommet slings give even load distribution on critical lifts.

Spreader beam and rigging assembly

Destruction testing, 20 mm steel wire rope
Toco destruction tested 20 mm steel wire rope to SANS ISO 7531 on SANAS-accredited load cells. The rope carried a minimum break of 25 tonnes and achieved 30 tonnes actual before failure.

Testing of this kind is what sits behind a certificate. Toco operates a 200 tonne proof bench at the Germiston branch with load cells SANAS calibrated to 100 tonnes, and the proof bed is designed to proof load steel wire rope slings up to 8 metres in length.
Pedestrian suspension bridge, Eswatini

Toco Lifting supplied the main and suspension cables for the Sivalo suspension bridge in Eswatini, a pedestrian crossing built so that children could reach school safely.
The photograph shows the bridge under construction: the steel head frame on the concrete tower, the suspension cables being rigged, and the abutment being finished. The completed structure carries a timber deck between mesh side panels.

Pivot irrigation gearbox lifting clamp

Toco designed and built a custom lifting clamp for pivot irrigation (spilpunt) gearboxes, so a gearbox can be lifted off its shaft and handled safely in the field rather than slung improvised.

What sits behind every job on this page
Toco Lifting is an approved Lifting Machinery Entity, LME No. 008, under Driven Machinery Regulation 18(5) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993. The approval covers examining and performance testing of lifting tackles across five categories: chain blocks, steel wire ropes, chain slings, steel wire slings and flat webbings. Yes. Toco supplies into the SADC region and on international export. What factor of safety does Toco apply to steel wire rope slings?
Six to one under DMR 18 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, which is the norm Toco applies in South Africa. Where a sling is specified for international export, the factor of safety is 5:1, the international standard norm. Endless splices, meaning cable-laid grommets, carry 8:1 under DMR 18.
How often must lifting equipment be inspected and tested?
Lifting tackle must be re-inspected every three months under Driven Machinery Regulation 18(10)(e) of the OHS Act. Where a Performance (Load) Test Certificate is issued it is valid for twelve months. SANS 500 governs the inspection, testing and examination of hand-operated chain blocks and lever hoists in use.
