Toco Lifting supplies genuine Vital® chain block spare parts and carries out in-house repair, load testing and recertification of Vital chain blocks across South Africa. As the sole Southern African distributor of Vital® chain blocks since 2018, Toco sources authentic OEM components and returns each block to service with a valid Performance (Load) Test Certificate.

Toco Lifting holds Lifting Machinery Entity registration LME No. 008 under the Driven Machinery Regulations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, with technical oversight by Anton van Staden, an ECSA-registered Lifting Machinery Inspector (Reg. #201112078). That means a worn or damaged Vital chain block can be repaired with genuine parts and legally recertified by the same supplier — without sending it to a separate testing house.

Are these genuine Vital® chain block parts?

Yes. Toco is the sole authorised Southern African distributor of Vital® chain blocks, so the components we fit are genuine OEM parts — not aftermarket substitutes. Vital chain blocks are Japanese-manufactured, comply with SANS 1594, and run load chain that complies with SANS 1592. Can a worn chain block be repaired, or must it be replaced?

In most cases it can be repaired. Toco operates fully stocked in-house testing and repair facilities, so our technicians strip, assess and rebuild Vital chain blocks — replacing load chain, hooks, brake components and gear sets as needed — then load test and recertify the unit before it returns to site. Repair is usually faster and more cost-effective than replacement, and keeps your equipment compliant.

How often must a chain block be tested and recertified?

A chain block is a lifting machine that can suspend and halt a load, so it requires a Performance (Load) Test Certificate, which is valid for 12 months. Lifting tackle and machines must also be re-inspected at intervals not exceeding three months under DMR 18(10)(e) of the OHS Act. Toco re-certifies after inspection, issuing the correct certificate for the equipment class.

Who is allowed to issue the load test certificate?

Only a registered Lifting Machinery Entity (LME) with a Lifting Machinery Inspector (LMI) may issue a load test certificate, and only for the equipment in its approved scope. Toco is LME No. 008 with ECSA-registered LMI Anton van Staden, so repaired Vital chain blocks are tested and certified in-house under our own registration.

In-house testing and repair

Toco’s workshop is equipped for the full service cycle — inspection, repair, proof load testing and certification — using SANAS-accredited load cells and a proof loading bed with a load test capacity of up to 180 tonnes. Vital chain blocks are serviced across the 0.5 to 20 ton range used in mining, construction, plant maintenance and shutdowns, marine and general industry.

What is the difference between genuine and aftermarket chain block parts?

Genuine Vital® parts are made by the original manufacturer to the same specification as the components fitted at the factory, so they preserve the block’s rated performance and its compliance with SANS 1594 and SANS 1592. Aftermarket substitutes carry no such assurance. As the authorised distributor, Toco fits genuine parts only.

How long does a chain block repair and recertification take?

Turnaround depends on the fault, the capacity and parts availability, but because Toco repairs, load tests and certifies in-house under LME 008, units are not shuttled between a repairer and a separate testing house — which removes the main cause of delay. Can a chain block be recertified without replacing parts?

Yes. If inspection shows the block is sound, it can be load tested and issued a fresh Performance (Load) Test Certificate without parts replacement. Where wear is found, the relevant components are replaced first, then the unit is tested and certified. The certificate is valid for 12 months.

Is the load chain replaceable on a Vital chain block?

Yes. Load chain is a wearing component and can be replaced as part of a workshop repair. Toco fits genuine Vital® load chain that complies with SANS 1592, then load tests and recertifies the block before it returns to service. Spare parts including load chain are available on request.

Does Toco service chain blocks from other brands?

Toco specialises in genuine Vital® parts and service as the sole Southern African distributor. For inspection, load testing and certification, Toco is registered as LME No. 008 for the equipment in its approved scope — for equipment or scope outside this, the position is confirmed on enquiry.
