Toco Lifting supplies drop-forged bow and dee shackles for lifting and rigging, with Working Load Limits from 0.5 tonne to 150 tonne, in Grade 6 (high-tensile) and Grade 8 (alloy), and in screw-pin, bolt-nut-and-split-pin, or round-pin form. Every shackle is supplied with a Conformance Inspection Certificate, and all standard sizes are held in stock.
A shackle is the main connecting link in a rigging system, the removable component that joins a sling to a load, to a hook, or to another item of lifting tackle. The bow (anchor) shackle has a wide, rounded body that takes load from several directions and suits multi-leg slings; the dee shackle has a narrow body built for straight, in-line, single-leg pulls. Toco Lifting is approved by the Department of Labour to undertake Conformance Inspections and Performance Testing (Load Testing) per approved SABS, SANS, or relevant OEM Standard.

Material grade
What grade of shackle does Toco supply?
Toco supplies forged shackles in two grades, Grade 6 and Grade 8. Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the mechanical strength and performance of a shackle is defined by its material grade, and shackle strength is governed by SANS 2415, the South African standard for forged dee and bow shackles for general lifting purposes.
Grade 6
High-tensile steel. The general-purpose forged lifting grade for bow and dee shackles across the standard WLL range.
Grade 8
Alloy steel. Higher-strength grade for the same nominal size, used where a higher rated load or duty is required.

Forged to US Federal Specification RR-C-271F, SANS 940 and EN 13889; strength and performance governed by SANS 2415.
Pin configuration
Which shackle pin type do you need?
Toco supplies bow and dee shackles in three pin configurations. The pin type is chosen for how often the shackle is connected and disconnected, and for the security the lift requires. All three are available across the range.
Screw pin
The pin threads directly into the shackle eye. Quick to connect and disconnect, suited to rigging that is made up and broken down regularly.
Bolt & nut with split pin
The pin is a bolt secured by a nut and a split cotter pin. The most secure arrangement, for long-term, semi-permanent or unattended connections and loads that may rotate or slide on the pin.
Round pin
The pin is held by a split cotter pin rather than a thread, used in specific rigging arrangements where a screw or bolt pin is not required.
Finish
What finishes are available?
Shackle finish is specified by the client to suit the working environment. Toco normally imports shackles hot-dip galvanised for corrosion resistance in outdoor and marine service.
Self-colour
Plain, untreated finish, for dry indoor or controlled service.
Galvanised
Zinc coating for general corrosion resistance.
Hot-dip galvanised
Heavier zinc coating for sustained outdoor and corrosive service. Toco’s standard import; Taurus shackles are supplied hot-dip galvanised as standard.

Where are bow and dee shackles used?
Shackles connect slings, tackle and loads within their rated Working Load Limit. Choose a bow shackle where side or racking forces are present, and a dee shackle for straight, in-line single-leg pulls. Typical duties below.

What is the difference between a bow shackle and a dee shackle?

Toco normally imports shackles hot-dip galvanised, and Taurus shackles are hot-dip galvanised as standard.
What certificate is supplied with a Toco shackle?
Each shackle is supplied with a Conformance Inspection Certificate, the certificate type for lifting tackle that cannot suspend or halt motion on its own. Where an OEM material trace is required, an OEM Certificate can be supplied on request. Always select and use a shackle within its rated Working Load Limit, and inspect it before each lift.
