Toco Lifting stocks the Taurus 30 tonne chain block, a 12 fall manual chain hoist and the flagship of the Taurus range, at its Germiston head office. It is the first and only one stocked in South Africa, and it sits above the 0.5 tonne to 20 tonne catalogue range. Because it is held in stock here rather than brought in on indent, it can be released against a shutdown or a breakdown rather than a lead time. As a registered Lifting Machinery Entity, LME No. 008, Toco can performance test and certify the block on supply and re-certify it for the life of the equipment.

The flagship of the Taurus range. A robust 30 tonne, 12 fall chain block bringing serious lifting capacity to industries where strength and dependability are non negotiable. The first and only one stocked in South Africa, and it is in Germiston, not on a sixteen week indent.

  • Supplied by a registered LME (LME 008)
  • Enquiry only, quoted to your load

Why Taurus

Taurus has become the most popular and fastest selling range of hoists in Southern Africa, earning its reputation through quality, reliability and performance you can trust.

From rigging and construction to mining, engineering, manufacturing and heavy industrial applications, Taurus lifting equipment is built for demanding environments and tough jobs.

Stock in Germiston, not a lead time

Heavy capacity blocks are usually brought into South Africa on indent, which means the lift waits for the shipping. A shutdown date does not move because a hoist is on the water.

Holding this unit locally means it can be released against a planned shutdown, a breakdown or a project mobilisation, and inspected before it leaves. Confirm current availability on enquiry before you plan around it.

Tested and certified in house

Chain blocks are the first of the five categories on the LME 008 certificate. Toco Lifting is a registered Lifting Machinery Entity, LME No. 008, approved under Driven Machinery Regulation 18(5) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 for examining and performance testing of lifting tackles.

That means this block can be performance tested and certified before it goes to site, and re-certified for the life of the equipment, in house at Germiston rather than sent out. Inspections are carried out under a Lifting Machinery Inspector registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa.

What 12 fall means for the lift

The falls are the load chain parts carrying the load between the top hook and the bottom hook block. Twelve of them share the load across more chain than an 8 fall unit, which is what allows the higher capacity.

The trade off is deliberate speed. More falls means more hand chain pulled for the same height of lift. On a lift of this size that is the correct behaviour, not a limitation.

For lifts inside 20 tonne, see Taurus chain blocks. For the heavy duty range, see Vital® chain blocks, where Toco is the sole authorised distributor for the Republic of South Africa.

Frequently asked questions

What is the capacity of the Taurus 30 tonne chain block?

30 tonne, in a 12 fall configuration. It is the flagship of the Taurus range and sits above the standard catalogue range, which runs from 0.5 tonne to 20 tonne.

Is it in stock in South Africa?

Yes. It is the first and only 30 tonne Taurus chain block stocked in South Africa, held at Toco Lifting in Germiston rather than brought in on a sixteen week indent. It can be released against a shutdown date or a breakdown. Confirm availability on enquiry before you plan around it.

What does 12 fall mean on a chain block?

The number of falls is the number of load chain parts carrying the load between the top hook and the bottom hook block. Each additional fall shares the load across more chain, which raises the capacity of the unit. The trade off is speed and effort: more falls means more hand chain to pull for the same distance of lift. A 30 tonne block at 12 fall lifts slowly and deliberately, which is what heavy lifting wants.

Can Toco performance test and certify a chain block of this size?

Yes. Chain blocks are the first of the five categories on the LME 008 certificate, so examination and performance testing sit inside Toco Lifting approval under Driven Machinery Regulation 18(5) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993. Testing is carried out in house at Germiston.

What lift height is supplied?

Standard lift is 3 metres, as across the range. Other lift heights are chained to order. Confirm headroom and hand chain length on enquiry.

How does it compare to the 20 tonne Taurus chain block?

The 20 tonne is the top of the standard Taurus catalogue range and is an 8 fall unit. The 30 tonne is the flagship above it at 12 fall. For lifts inside 20 tonne the catalogue range covers it. For anything above, this is the unit Toco holds.

What industries is it built for?

Rigging and construction, mining, engineering, manufacturing and heavy industrial applications. Taurus lifting equipment is built for demanding environments and tough jobs, where strength and dependability are non negotiable.

Do you publish a price?

No. The Toco catalogue works on enquiry rather than checkout and prices are not published. Tell Toco the capacity, the lift height and the application, and a quote follows.
