Taurus lever hoists are medium-duty hoists ergonomically designed for maximum output efficiency and safe operation, and fitted with overload protection devices. These portable lifting devices are used in factories, mines, farms, construction sites, wharves, docks and warehouses for a wide variety of lifting and materials handling operations. Capacities range from 0.75 ton to 6 tons.
Toco Lifting (Pty) Ltd supplies Taurus lever hoists across South Africa and SADC, a medium-duty, cost-effective range of ratchet lever hoists with capacities from 0.75 ton to 9 ton. Taurus lever hoists are endurance tested for quality, performance and safety before dispatch, and are supplied as a value alternative to the premium Vital range. Toco has supplied lifting equipment since 2002.

Toco Lifting is a registered Lifting Machinery Entity, LME No. 008, and has supplied lifting, lashing and rigging equipment since 2002 from a Germiston head office and a Cape Town branch. A lever hoist is operated by ratcheting a side lever, which makes it suited to horizontal pulling, tensioning and lifts in tight spaces where a hand chain is impractical. The Taurus range gives sites a dependable, lower-cost lever hoist for that work.
Taurus lever hoists cover the capacities below, supplied as standard with a 3 metre lift. Longer lift heights, to 12 metres and beyond, are supplied on request.
| Capacity | Fall configuration |
|---|---|
| 0.75 ton | Single fall |
| 1.5 ton | Single fall |
| 3 ton | Single fall |
| 6 ton | Double fall |
| 9 ton | Triple fall |
Standard build is a 3 metre lift. Longer lift heights are quoted on request. Contact Toco to confirm the configuration for your application.
The two tools do different jobs. A lever hoist is operated by ratcheting a side lever and is designed for horizontal pulling, tensioning and lifts in confined spaces where there is no room to pull a hand chain. A chain block is operated by pulling an endless hand chain and is designed for vertical lifting, typically anchored overhead. Choose a lever hoist for pulling, tensioning and tight-space work, and a chain block for straightforward overhead lifting. Toco supplies both as Taurus and Vital ranges.
Toco supplies two lever hoist ranges. The Vital range is the premium, Japanese-manufactured option, and Toco is the sole Southern African distributor. The Taurus range is the medium-duty, cost-effective option, suited to sites that need a dependable lever hoist at a lower price point. Both are endurance tested before dispatch and both can be supplied tested and certified by Toco. For heavy, high-cycle or critical work, Vital is the stronger choice; for general and lighter-duty pulling and tensioning where cost matters, Taurus is well suited.
| Consideration | Taurus | Vital |
|---|---|---|
| Positioning | Medium-duty, cost-effective | Premium, heavy-duty |
| Capacity range | 0.75 ton to 9 ton | 0.25 ton to 9 ton |
| Best for | General pulling and tensioning, budget-conscious sites | Heavy, high-cycle and critical work |
See the Vital® lever hoist range for the premium option. Toco will advise on the right range for your duty and budget.
| Sector | Typical Taurus lever hoist duty |
|---|---|
| Construction | Tensioning, horizontal pulling and lifts in confined spaces |
| Daily plant and maintenance | Pulling and positioning equipment during routine maintenance work |
| Workshops and manufacturing | Tight-space lifting and tensioning on assembly and repair work |
Toco does not limit Taurus lever hoists to these sectors. They are supplied for general pulling, tensioning and lifting across industry. For heavy or high-cycle duties, see the Vital® range.
Every Taurus lever hoist is endurance tested for quality, performance and safety before it leaves Toco. Toco is the same company that supplies the hoist and tests it. Full detail of the testing and certification scope is on the Lifting Equipment Testing & Certification page.
