Forged bow and dee shackles for lifting and rigging

Toco Lifting has supplied forged shackles to riggers, mining contractors and heavy-industry sites across South Africa and the SADC region since 2002. A shackle is the main connecting link in a rigging system, the removable component that joins a sling to a load, to a hook, or to another item of lifting tackle. Bow and dee shackles are the two principal forms: the bow (also called an anchor shackle) has a wide, rounded body that takes load from several directions and suits multi-leg slings; the dee has a narrow body that suits straight, in-line single-leg pulls. Toco Lifting is a registered Lifting Machinery Entity, LME No. 008, approved by the Department of Labour under the Driven Machinery Regulations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Every shackle Toco supplies is a forged, rated lifting component and is supplied with a Conformance Inspection Certificate.

Shackle types and configurations

Toco supplies bow and dee shackles in the pin configurations the work calls for. The pin type is chosen for how often the shackle is connected and disconnected, and for the level of security the lift requires.

  • Screw pin, the pin threads directly into the shackle eye. Quick to connect and disconnect, suited to rigging that is made up and broken down regularly.
  • Bolt and nut, the pin is a bolt secured by a nut and a split cotter pin. The most secure arrangement, suited to long-term, semi-permanent or unattended connections, and to loads that may rotate or slide on the pin.
  • Round pin, the pin is held by a split cotter pin rather than a thread, used in specific rigging arrangements.

Toco also supplies Crosby, commercial, large dee and stainless steel shackles, alongside other industry-specific shackle types to client requirement, contact Toco Lifting with the application and the Working Load Limit needed.

Material grade and standards

Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the mechanical strength and performance of a shackle is defined by its material grade. Toco supplies shackles in two grades:

  • Grade 6, high-tensile steel.
  • Grade 8, alloy steel.

Shackle strength and performance are governed by SANS 2415, the South African standard for forged dee and bow shackles for general lifting purposes. Toco supplies shackles manufactured to recognised forged-shackle standards, United States Federal Specification RR-C-271H, SANS 940 and EN 13889. Toco imports shackle stock from the United States and other countries.

Working Load Limits

Toco supplies bow and dee shackles across a wide capacity range. Popular sizes run from 0.25 tons up to 55 tons Working Load Limit; specialised shackles of 85 tons and higher are supplied on enquiry. The Working Load Limit is the rated load for the shackle in service, always select a shackle by its WLL, and never by its breaking strength. Tell Toco the load, the pin configuration and the grade required, and Toco will confirm the correct shackle for the lift.

Finishes

Shackle finish is specified by the client to suit the working environment:

  • Self-colour, plain, untreated finish.
  • Galvanised, zinc coating for corrosion resistance.
  • Hot-dip galvanised, a heavier zinc coating for sustained outdoor and corrosive service. Toco normally imports shackles hot-dip galvanised, and Taurus shackles are supplied hot-dip galvanised as standard.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a bow shackle and a dee shackle?

A bow shackle has a wide, rounded body and can take load from several directions, which makes it the choice for multi-leg slings and for connections where side or racking forces are present. A dee shackle has a narrow body and is built for straight, in-line pulls on a single-leg sling. A dee shackle should not be side-loaded; where side load is expected, use a bow shackle.

What does the shackle pin configuration mean?

The pin configuration is how the shackle pin is held in place. A screw pin threads directly into the shackle eye and is quick to connect and disconnect, suiting rigging that is made up and broken down regularly. A bolt and nut pin is secured by a nut and a split cotter pin and is the most secure arrangement, suiting long-term or unattended connections. A round pin is held by a split cotter pin rather than a thread. Toco supplies all three configurations.

What grade of shackle does Toco supply?

Toco supplies forged shackles in Grade 6, a high-tensile steel, and Grade 8, an alloy steel. Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the mechanical strength and performance of a shackle is defined by its material grade. Shackle strength and performance are governed by SANS 2415, the South African standard for forged dee and bow shackles for general lifting purposes.

What capacity of shackle can Toco supply?

Toco supplies bow and dee shackles across a wide capacity range. Popular sizes run from 0.25 tons up to 55 tons Working Load Limit, and specialised shackles of 85 tons and higher are supplied on enquiry. Always select a shackle by its Working Load Limit, which is the rated load in service, and never by its breaking strength.

Which standards do Toco shackles meet?

Toco supplies shackles manufactured to recognised forged-shackle standards: United States Federal Specification RR-C-271H, SANS 940 and EN 13889. Shackle strength and performance under South African regulation are governed by SANS 2415. Toco imports shackle stock from the United States and other countries.

What certificate is supplied with a Toco shackle?

Each shackle is supplied with a Conformance Inspection Certificate, the certificate type for lifting tackle that cannot suspend or halt motion on its own. Where an OEM material trace is required, an OEM Certificate can be supplied on request. Always select and use a shackle within its rated Working Load Limit, and inspect it before each lift.
