Toco Lifting supplies steel wire rope from 1 mm to 56 mm across South Africa and the SADC region, cut to length from stock in Germiston and Cape Town. Steel wire ropes are one of the five equipment categories inside Toco's Lifting Machinery Entity registration, LME No. 008. The standard stock construction is 6x36 fibre core, ungalvanised, right hand lay at 1960 MPa, with 6x19 and IWRC constructions, left hand and Langs lay, galvanised, stainless and PVC covered rope available on request. Rope is supplied with a Conformance Inspection Certificate, and a Mill Certificate on request where a material trace is required.

The standard stock rope is 6x36 fibre core, ungalvanised, right hand lay, 1960 MPa, which covers most general lifting and rigging work and accounts for the bulk of what leaves the branch. Also supplied on request: 6x19 and IWRC constructions, left hand lay, ordinary and Langs lay, galvanised, stainless steel and PVC covered rope.
Rope is stocked to 30 mm as standard. Larger diameters through to 56 mm are sourced on enquiry.
Scope and certification
Steel wire ropes are one of the five equipment categories on Toco's Department of Labour approval, LME No. 008, granted under Driven Machinery Regulation 18(5) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Rope is supplied with a Conformance Inspection Certificate, and a Mill Certificate can accompany it where a material trace is required.
Toco also assembles finished steel wire rope slings and cable laid grommets in house from the same stock, with full traceability from rope to certificate.

What is the D over d ratio and why does it matter?
D over d describes how sharply a rope is bent: the diameter of the sheave or pin against the diameter of the rope. Bending a rope too tightly sharply reduces its effective strength and shortens its life. As a general guide keep D over d at 16 to 1 or greater in general lifting, and 18 to 1 or greater for the drum to rope ratio on a winch.
What does 6x36 mean?
It describes the rope construction. Six is the number of outer strands and 36 is the number of wires in each strand. More wires per strand gives a more flexible rope that handles bending better; fewer, thicker wires give better abrasion resistance. Toco will match the construction to the duty.
What certificate comes with steel wire rope?
Each rope length is supplied with a Conformance Inspection Certificate. A Mill Certificate, the OEM birth certificate for the material, can accompany it on request where a full material trace is required.
