Three strand hawser laid rope
Manilla, a natural abaca fibre, flexible, durable, abrasion resistant, low stretch with a firm grip. Used in pulley blocks, rope ladders and hawser applications.
Sisal, natural fibre in an oiled grade for longer life, economical, durable, used for ties and barriers.
Cotton, natural soft fibre with a secure grip, used for tent lines and barrier ropes.
Polypropylene, synthetic, abrasion, acid and UV resistant, low stretch, light, non absorbent and floats.
Nylon, heat set synthetic, lightweight, elastic, abrasion resistant, shock absorbent with mould resistance. Used for safety belt lines and in shipping and fishing.
Braided ropes and cords
Eight strand plaited in polypropylene, nylon or manilla for capstan and mooring use; polyethylene braided ski rope; polyester braided yacht rope; cotton solid braid and sashcord; nylon cords in basket, solid and flat braid; and plastic, carcass, agricultural, baler and mine twines.

Which rope should I choose?
It depends on the duty. Polypropylene is light, floats and resists acid and UV, which suits fishing and marine work. Nylon is elastic and shock absorbent, used for safety belt lines and shipping. Polyester braided holds up to UV with low stretch, used for marine and yachting. Manilla is a natural fibre with a firm grip used in pulley blocks, rope ladders and hawser applications. What is the working load limit of a rope?
Breaking load is where the rope physically fails. Working load limit is the rated safe service load, which is the breaking load divided by a safety factor. The correct factor depends on the material, the construction and the way the rope is used. Request the rope specification from Toco rather than working from a generic chart, and never exceed the rated working load limit.
Is rope suitable for overhead lifting?
Fibre rope is not a substitute for rated lifting tackle in overhead lifting. Where a load must be lifted and suspended, use a rated sling, chain or steel wire rope assembly supplied and certified for the purpose. Toco supplies both and will tell you which applies.
